OETDA Fall 2012: Ohio ETD Mission and Vision

The Double Tree Suites in right in the heart of downtown, so there is quick access to attractions such as the Short North Arts District, historic German Village, and the Arena District.  There are plenty of shopping, dining, sightseeing, and relaxing possibilities in all of these venues.  Columbus has also worked hard to improve the parks the follow the Scioto River as it winds its way through the downtown area making this a very pleasurable walk.  You can also check out the State Capital building as well as the new Columbus Commons Park with its carousel and pavilion areas.  I have included some links below that will give you a taste of what is available:

What:
With the goal of increasing ETD graduate studies, library cataloging, and thesis and dissertation efficiencies within universities, the fifth annual productivity improvement meeting will be held this fall in Columbus, OH. Since we did not hold a spring conference due to the kickoff of the USETDA, this year’s semi-annual productivity improvement meeting has been expanded to include additional sessions.

Featured Speakers:

Dawn Bikowski, Director of the English Language Improvement Program, Linguistics Department, Ohio University, teaches advanced writing to graduate students in many disciplines and does teacher training courses for students preparing to teach the English language. Additionally, she has traveled throughout the world doing teacher training, curriculum development, and program assessment. Receiving her MA in Linguistics and her PhD in Instructional Technology, her research has focused on technology and intercultural education and on technology and writing.

Thomas Dowling, Assistant Director of Library Services, OhioLINK ETD Center, handles the online processing of all ETDs for universities in the State of Ohio. The Ohio Library and Information Network, OhioLINK, is a consortium of Ohio’s college and university libraries and the State Library of Ohio. Serving more than 600,000 students, faculty, and staff at 85 institutions, OhioLINK’s membership includes 17 public universities, 23 community/technical colleges, 44 private colleges and the State Library of Ohio. The ETD Center is a free online database of 30,000+ undergraduate honors theses, masters’ theses, and doctoral dissertations from students at participating Ohio colleges and universities. OhioLINK is part of Ohio’s ongoing tradition in pioneering library automation. The Ohio State University and others in Ohio began integrating campus library systems at an early date. In the 1960s, state funds supported the development of OCLC–then called the Ohio College Library Center.

Lou Haines is the Assistant to the Associate Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Since 2007, Lou has been in charge of processing all theses and dissertations filed by the University’s graduate students on OhioLINK. Lou will present information on how Miami’s Graduate School processes their theses and dissertations from format check to upload at the OhioLINK ETD repository.

Austin McLean is the Director of Scholarly Communication and Dissertation Publishing for ProQuest, Ann Arbor, Michigan. He oversees staff that develops and manages Dissertations and Master’s Theses publishing and products in all formats (digital, print, and microfilm). Austin also works in areas of scholarly communication and digital preservation at ProQuest, including coordinating the recent analysis of the ProQuest Dissertation and Theses Database (PQDT), which was part of a Center for Research Libraries (CRL) study funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Austin is a frequent speaker at library conferences, having presented at Coalition of Networked Information (CNI), Online Information, ALA, ETD 2010, and Internet Librarian. He serves at Treasurer of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD), a non-profit group dedicated to sharing knowledge and best practices for Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs).

Robert Parker is the ETD Coordinator for the University of Florida Libraries. He has worked with ETDs since joining the Preservation Department in 2002. During that time he has overseen the transition from paper and electronic submissions to electronic only submissions, receiving the last paper copy in 2007. As the Library ETD Coordinator, he chairs the campus wide ETD Committee and is the library liaison to the UF Graduate School and Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA). He serves on the board of directors of the US ETD Association.

Ohio ETD Association Fourth Annual Conference

The highly successful Fourth Annual OETDA Conference was held on Thursday and Friday, April 1 and 2, 2010 at the Embassy Suites, Dublin, OH. The conference focused on Retro Scanning of ETDs and features the results of the several success Retro scanning projects including: Ohio State University, a national study ETD retro scanning, ProQuest/UMI retro scanning projects, and more. A national dissertation study findings on publisher rejections for articles derived or taken directly from ETDs was presented as well.
